The Ecosage Circle

Ecosages are people that have decided to take charge of the planet's climatic future. Some of them are worried because of the ice storms, the West Nile virus or coastal flooding. Others simply want to help the planet because they love nature…

On the outside, ecosages are ordinary people, but on the inside, they are real heroes… They succeed to live in a different way in order to reduce their CO2 emissions. In this way, some ecosages walk to get to their destination. Others put their lunch in reusable containers… Others buy used clothing while others watch the opening of spring flowers to observe the signs of climate change… We can say that ecosages are really proud of what they accomplish because they have the impression that they are making a difference for the quality of the environment.

The ecosages exist since March 2002… At this time, they were called mutants. However, their name confused people and they were thought to be stars of violent movies. In 2003, they decided to call themselves ecosages, that is, humans that live in the environment in a reasonable way.

We think that there are 1 600 ecosages today, spread in the four Atlantic provinces. Their goal is to expand their circle until their number goes around the Earth to protect it…

Since 2003, some ecosages specialize themselves according to different missions that they want to accomplish. There are the autosages (people who decide to drive their automobile in an intelligent way), urbansages (people who plan their town to reduce vehicle travel) and domesticsages (people who try to change their way of living in their house)… However, many ecosages prefer not to specialize in one mission and try a little of everything…

Ecosages work in teams of two (two friends, one younger and one older…) or in small communities (social groups, group of employees…). They are therefore more efficient in their actions because they collaborate by giving themselves tricks to persist in their new way of living.

This year, many ecosages will get involved in Environment Canada's One Tonne Challenge. They will try to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by one tonne before 2005. The future will tell us what they will be able to accomplish...
