Question 11: Which artists or artistic styles have influenced you? How does this play out, in concrete terms?

I think there have been several artists who’ve surely influenced me. From the beginning, I think that one of my professors, Pierre Caille, really inspired me. Not only because he was a professor, we were also friends, and outside classes, sometimes instead of taking some boring art history courses, I preferred going to work on his pieces with him and preparing exhibitions, it was Pierre Caille. After that, I had another friend too, I could say that Michael Snow and Robert Frank were… Both are quite different, one much more conceptual and Robert Frank, what was really interesting with him was that he was from the “beat generation”, that he was from the era of Kerouac and Allan Ginsberg. He had me listening to Reggae before Reggae existed on records anywhere else. So these were surely sources for me that marked and influenced my work, the liberty of Robert Frank and probably the more intellectual and conceptual side of Michael Snow, on the other hand, also gave me another balance. But there is “art brut” and naive art – “art brut” is kind of like people like DuBuffet, who know what they’re doing – and naive art is what’s created by people who don’t really know what they’re doing. But sometimes it can be a mix of the two. Some people say it looks a lot like children’s art, but my work has nothing to do with children’s art.
