Question 17: In your opinion, how could society provide better support for the dissemination and the development of visual arts?

I think that society could improve the distribution and development of arts at two levels. In terms of the government, I think that it should be recognized that arts and culture are a tourist attraction to a certain degree. We give back to society. Also, we could maybe put in place a policy regarding the acquisition of works somewhat similar to the “one percent” rule in Toronto, Vancouver and the province of Quebec. We could also maybe look at income tax exemptions for creation grants. As far as society in general, companies and people could maybe try to buy more locally. To think that you can pay 400 dollars for a framed poster from a downtown boutique, when you could buy something from a local artist, maybe even at a better price. These are possible changes. I think that it’s maybe also the way we see things. We’ll go to see a movie and pay 20 dollars per person. But when a music group plays somewhere on Main Street for a six dollar cover charge, we find it expensive. I think that it’s a conditioning that we need to be encouraged to change maybe.
