Question 17: In your opinion, how could society provide better support for the dissemination and the development of visual arts?

I’m tempted to say that artists deserve a salary, however minimal, to support us. Often that’s what prevents us from going further, the lack of funds. You can’t pay the rent with paintings and sculptures, even if your landlord is really open-minded. As for the distribution and dissemination of art, you have to remember that we are not a wealthy province. I’m not expecting solutions from the province, I mean government solutions. The private sector could invest more than they do in works of art. That would be a way of encouraging artists, giving them a way to earn a living, sometimes for months. And why wouldn’t a given company that has decided to buy a sculpture, in addition to paying for the piece of art, also pay wages to the artist for six months’ work? That might be something interesting. This happens once in a while but not necessarily in our community. No, I don’t believe the solution will come from the government. I think it should be generalised, companies, individuals who buy more art. There is now some education being done in that direction, I’ve seen. Probably in my lifetime there won’t be a fulfillment of these efforts, but there will be others who will benefit from it, you know.
