Question 17: In your opinion, how could society provide better support for the dissemination and the development of visual arts?

I think society has a duty to support its artists because a society without art would be a sad, a very sad society. At the same time it seems utopian to think that artists could entirely live off society. The only way I can see that the situation of artists could be improved is through education. The need for art, the necessity of the existence of art, should be more strongly emphasised to reach the ordinary man and woman. Art appreciation should start right in elementary schools. After a few years, things might change, people would rush out to galleries rather than to the malls, let’s say. But it would be very gradual, once again. I believe that the first step is education. Then if governments all of a sudden wanted to support artists in a more encouraging way, that would just make sense.
