Question 16: Do you think an artist has a specific role to play in society? If so, what is it?

Transcription

For a long time I thought that artists had to influence society, the artist had to change society, the artist had to shake it up, had to shock. Then I don’t know if it’s wisdom of getting older but I’ve realised that in general the artist reflects society. It would be quite exceptional for an artist to say or do something that really turned everything upside down. Actually I can’t think of any. We are the people of the era in which we live, and in the moment, we reflect the era we go through. So if we influence society in some way, that’s a bonus, but to be its… to set down its likeness, and to serve as a kind of mirror so that society can see a reflection of itself, that’s already a great accomplishment.
