Biography of Raymond Martin
Raymond Martin was born in 1958 in Alma, Quebec. In 1981, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of Ottawa (Ontario) and moved to Moncton, New Brunswick. In 1986, he was awarded a Master’s degree in Psychology by the Université de Moncton. He has been a painter for many years, and has built a professional practice in psychology.
While he was studying psychology, Martin developed a taste for paintings of all eras and various artistic movements. He became seriously interested in the lives of artists, their works and their painting techniques.
A self-taught artist, Martin uses a unique technique. He first applies several layers of oil paint to the canvas, then he traces outlines using a sharpened chopstick. When the paint is dry, he paints the forms with various colours.
Since 1985, his work has been exhibited at Galerie Colline, in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Gallery ConneXion, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen of the Université de Moncton, and Galerie Langage Plus in Alma, Québec. In 1994, he represented New Brunswick at the 2nd Francophone Games held in Paris.
His works hang in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, the New Brunswick Art Bank, the Fédération des Caisses populaires acadiennes in Caraquet, New Brunswick and the Galerie Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen of the Université de Moncton, as well as several private collections.
